Amazon.com Review This quiet, clean-running cordless tool is ideal for anyone who needs to clip tall, awkwardly-sited, or hard-to-reach hedges and shrubs. It effectively trims to a height of ten feet, thanks to two interlocking components that form an extended pole shape. The hardened, machined steel 18-inch cutting blade is exceptionally durable and features dual action to minimize vibration and increase user comfort. The 180-degree pivoting head adjusts to five different positions for hedges both high and low and effectively trims branches up to 7/16-inch in diameter. A powerful 18-volt NiCad battery provides 2400 revolutions per minute and runs the trimmer for up to 50 minutes between charges, as well as starting up effortlessly with the press of a trigger. (A locking switch enhances safety by preventing accidental starts.) Without a cumbersome electrical cord to drag around, even big jobs feel easier, and there are never any oil, gas, or tune-ups needed. The unit assembles and disassembles in seconds using locking collars to join the power end to the cutting head. A carry bag allows for easy transport and storage at home or to professional worksites. Also included are a battery charger and blade cover for increased storage safety. This trimmer is covered by a two-year warranty in addition to a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. It weighs just over eight pounds and measures 78 inches long when put together. --Mary Park
Amazon.com Product Description Designed for trimming shrubs and hedges with a height of 10 feet, this cordless electric pole hedge trimmer gets its power from one 18-volt NiCad battery (included, along with compatible charger) and helps you cut even hard-to-access pieces that most trimmers can't reach. The NPT318 features two interlocking sections that combine to create an extended pole measuring 78 inches, and a pre-hardened, machined steel, 18-inch, dual action cutting blade that won't create excessive vibration. There's also a 180-degree pivoting head that can be placed in five different positions to accommodate varying hedge sizes measuring up to 7/16-inch in diameter. To help you get more done in less time, the battery supplies 2,400 RPM and keeps the NPT318 going strong for up to 50 minutes on each charge. It also starts up with just a touch of the trigger, and a locking switch protects against unintended start-ups.

Complain about this trimmer? Are you kidding? July 20, 2007 Robert E. Malone (Northborough, MA) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
After shopping for over a year for a product like this and agonizing over the $4-600 price tag on a gas unit (couldn't find one to rent either!) I tripped across this on amazon. After reading all of the reviews and marveling at the $110 pricetag (and getting a mindblowing quote from a landscaper for a days worth of hedge trimming) I bought one. It arrived, I put it on the charger for the night and, like a kid at Christmas, I woke up the next morning, grabbed my easily assembled new toy (with a free storage case) and headed out to wreak some havoc on the shrubbery.
Long story short...in 30 minutes I had trimmed every darn shrub under 10 feet tall in sight without breaking out a ladder or working up more than a mild sweat. I still need to break out the ladder to do the top of the enormous burning bushes in my front yard (12 feet in diameter if they are an inch!), but I have no doubt I can handle it with this tool. In my opinion this thing is nothing short of a miracle worker.
Answers to the typical questions I have read on this trimmer:
Does it get heavy?
Yes...I am 6 feet tall and 200+ lbs and it gets heavy after ten minutes or so of constant trimming. So does every other trimmer I own. I suggest you switch hands and keep on trimming. It is not that heavy or awkward that I couldn't left hand it, then switch again later.
Does it have trouble cutting through thick branches?
Yes, but it is a hedge trimmer for crying out loud. If you need to cut a 3/4" plus branch you are using the wrong tool, in my opinion. Grab your loppers. Now that you have this tool you'll cut your hedges more often and more effectively so long term you won't have as many thick branches to deal with.
Limited battery life?
Mine was good for about 30 minutes of trimming. Doesn't sound great, but keep in mind that you can trim so quickly and effectively with this tool that I literally ran out of hedges in 30 minutes and I trimmed over a dozen hedges EASY. What did I do with the rest of the 30 minutes? I pivoted the head to 45 degrees and used it to trim weeds and tall grass. That alone is worth buying this trimmer for. We have hundreds of tiger lillies. I can't wait to turn three hours of cutting them all back into 20 minutes of running around with my new trimmer!
Complain? If you can complain about this trimmer at $110 you can complain about the quality of a free lunch! I might buy a second just to have a spare. I am taking it to NH to show my friends this weekend.
Wow -- Better than I expected August 18, 2006 zcptrguy (San Diego, CA) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Wow, was all I could think when I took this outside for the first time today.
We have some 8 FT high bushes, some that grow about 7 feet deep, and tons of plants all around this 1/2 acre yard. A year or so ago, we bought one of those Remington Pole hedge trimmers. It broke the first time out and the head wouldn't lock in position. Actually, I think it was broken before I opened the box. Despite that, I used it a few times, and it was such a hassle, dragging the cord around, and, though it is about the same weight as this one, it just felt heavier. I think it was the way you can balance this B&D without having to worry about moving the extension cord or where it is so you don't cut it off.
I was worried that it wouldn't do the job, as this one cuts "up to" 7/16, and practically up to 1/3" per other reviews. The Remington does up to 3/4" It did go through some tough branches. However, I took a ruler and marked the three sizes on a card and took it outside to see how the difference would affect me and found that virtually all the branches I am usually interested in cutting are less than 7/16.
I'm a pretty big guy, but I can't trim for more than 30 or 40 minutes, so the battery life was not an issue. I charged the B&D battery for about 4 hours and couldn't wait to try it. It worked at full strength as long as my arms held up.
I think the big advantage to this, assuming I have a charged battery, is that I will be much more likely to go do some trimming, since the additional hassle of getting an extension cord, unravelling it, maybe hooking two together, and throwing it down the hill over and between the trees will not have to be done. I can just grab it and start cutting.
I know without a doubt that I will use this much more than the old corded one, and if the batteries do last 2-3 years, that's OK. I just found replacements, brand new on Amazon, for 30 bucks shipped.
I do wish they had included a LOCK ON feature, but the way the trigger is designed, it would be easy to clamp in place. However, I did switch hands a lot, and it was very easy to turn on, and was probably safer that way.
I had a new Remington unit sitting here, and hemmed and hawed over even trying a battery operated unit, but finally decided that the lack of a cord, the fact that I don't regularly need to trim anything over 7/16", and the overall quality I have always experienced with B&D products, coupled with all the positive reviews here, made it a MUST BUY. Now that I have used it, I have made a MUST KEEP decision!
It saved my landscape October 21, 2005 John Sciacchitano (NY United States) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
For some time now I have considered removing some large hemlocks that form the anchor for the design of my front yard landscape. The bushes are in good health but their size makes it increasingly difficult to maintain them.
I have had to use makeshift pole extensions to reach the uppermost portions.
Handling these contraptions has been difficult and as I am aging right along with the landscape, I've considered removing the largest of these beautiful plants.
With this tool I managed to accomplish my pruning tasks in less than two hours, a task that had previously taken four or more (that I had to spread over several days).
Plenty of battery power for my needs.
exceeded my expectations November 12, 2006 C. Barnaba (Wayne, PA USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Just used this for the first time today and was very impressed. I bought it to trim a giant forsythia bush I have on my property. It's a monster bush, like 7 feet tall and a good 30 feet circular. I have attacked it in the past with my regualar sized gas hedge trimmer, jumping into the bush, swinging the trimmer wildly around from the handle, standing on a step ladder, and could still never trim the middle quite right and usually had to break out the tree pole saw to finish the job. I figured I would have to spend $300 or so for a gas pole hedge trimmer, but when I saw a chance to pick this up for under $100 I figured I would give it a try. It works great! The bush has never looked better, and I was able to finish the job with charge to spare in the battery. It not only handled the new growth, but was able to cut down into the thicker more established branches. It never jammed once. If it proves reliable, I would not hesitate to buy another one in the future.

Best purchase I've made in a long time. Easy to use. Can complete trim jobs that formerly took four to five hours in about one hour.
